Personality: Carlene acts with grace and poise, as she was taught to growing up in her household. She often means well, but is unable to express herself in ways that common folk would understand.

History:
The Kaftans of Charlemagne were a regal sort, nobles of old money. None of whom were entirely sure where, when, or what their status originated from. Nevertheless, status is and will always be everything in the game of politics and power.
For years the Kaftans had made their home and money outside of the walls of any main city, preferring to do their business outside of the minds and eyesight of their rivals. This lead to their estate and vacation homes being spread far apart, none of them inside a town or city. They preferred their privacy.
Within each house lived one member or one family of Kaftans conducting their own business. They made their money, maintained their status, and raised their children in quiet alongside their servants, serfs, and, on occasion, slaves.
In the largest estate located in Brunwall, run by the head of the Kaftan clan, a young woman lived. She was the heir to the entire lineage, and the future of her family depended on her marriage to a capable young man. However, as it had come to pass, the young woman began experiencing strange dreams around the year of her fifteenth name day.
On occasion she would complain of an inability to sleep, but most of her objections were ignored by her elders and disregarded as nothing more than adolescent mood swings. The Kaftans were of Brunwall. Their views on the plight of women worried them little, and the concerns of an adolescent woman's dreams were even less of a concern.
Carlene finally managed to acquire some sleep aids from the family apothecary. They became her lifeline. Even so far as to say she had become addicted to them.
After a certain amount of time, the messages her dreams had been trying to send her became more and more viscous in their attempts to get her attention. Carlene began seeing the strange symbols even in her waking hours. Now she knew this couldn't be just simple dreams. It was clear to her that either some wicked enchanter was messing with her, or she had the Curse. Since she didn't know of any wicked enchanters in her parents employ, it could only be the latter.
To cover up her strange behavior, Carlene began pretending to have fantasies about adventure and freedom. These ideals worried her parents greatly, for Carlene was an extremely eligible bachelorette and their ticket to further success for their clan. To quell her supposed delusions of grandeur, her parents hired a guide to take her around the world for her economical studies on the condition that she return to wed before her eighteenth nameday.
