Name: Aasa Khatri
Birthplace: The Saracen Desert
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Age: 26
Affiliation: Commerce and Trade (Merchant's Guild)
Personality: As a merchant's daughter, Aasa grew up with all of the right mannerisms and know-how that was required for the job. However, after many years of piracy, banditry, and overall lawless behaviors, Aasa still retains a sort of rough and tumble attitude as well as lifestyle. Whenever she is not on the job or performing her merchant duties, she is likely either drinking, gambling, boisterously swearing, or some combination of the three. When she cannot talk her way out of a situation, or use her diplomatic skills to their advantage(such as with brutes or less intelligent creatures) she is certainly not above violence.
Physical Description: Aasa has an overall dark complexion. Her hair, eyes, and skin are all dark due to her region of origin. She also has a fair amount of muscle tone that would not necessarily befit a merchant. She has a small definitive scar on the right side of her upper lip, and often wears long gloves when doing mercantile work, to hide over scars received during her previous line of work.
History: Port Talon is the only large settlement in the Saracen Desert bordering the sea. In fact, its the only inhabitable city for miles. It was in this city that Aasa was raised in since birth. She grew in happiness with her father and two brothers. Their mother, having died in childbirth whist bringing Aasa's youngest brother into the world, was little more than a shadow of a memory to Aasa.
Her father was a member of the merchant's guild. A company of suppliers, importers, sellers, and traders that worked globally around Tryne. Due to their constant moving, Aasa grew very close to her father and brothers. Never being in one place for too long, it was difficult for her to become closer to people outside of her family. She aspired to be a great warrior like her older brother, a charming and diplomatic individual like her father, and a guardian and protector for her younger brother.
As Aasa grew up, she became resentful of the praise and adoration her brothers received. As males, they had more respect and standing in the world than she. Out of spite, she began sneaking out of the house while her brothers and father were preoccupied. By then, her father had grown too old and weary to travel on his own. He would often send his eldest son out on long journeys for the guild, despite Aasa being the better salesperson. Her youngest brother was now in training to take over the business and had inherited all of their mother's belongings out of their father's guilt that the boy had come into the world motherless.
Aasa, now largely ignored by her family, found attention in the form of new friends she met during her escapades outside of the house. Most of the town resented this gang that she'd fallen in with, but Aasa couldn't see the wrong in them if they had accepted her despite her gender. Clearly, there was something in them that wasn't in the other townsfolk. They had given her a chance.
Before long, she found herself at their every beck and call. Whether it be to fetch water, steal from the market, or give one of the posh children a spook, she was glad to oblige. It made her feel needed, useful, and wanted. All she'd wanted ever since her father had retired.
As the gang grew up together, however, their antics grew more and more severe. Sometimes even causing Aasa to question their mentalities. Just after her thirteenth name-day, Aasa's crew of misfits had formed a plan to break into the house of one of the uppity nobles outside of the city in order to teach them a lesson. Said noble had been known to come to town and harass the homeless children on the streets for amusement, even going so far as to torment them in other less harmless ways. Several of the children harassed went missing soon after being the target of unpleasantness, and now it was time to pay them back. Or at least, that was the reason they gave Aasa when they told her of their plans.
They quickly worked together a heist idea. They put their heads together and formed a plan of attack. They would spook the lord and lord's daughter, then take some of the family wealth to give back to the people. Or, at least, that was how Aasa understood it. She wasn't against the idea of revenge. She'd been the victim of bullying and unpleasantness herself due to associating with her current friend group.
The plan went without a hitch, for the first twenty minutes. Everyone was in place and they were waiting for the signal. Instead of the indicated signal, however, what they got was the bloodcurdling scream of the lord they were stealing from. Terrified that something had gone wrong, Aasa left her station to find out what happened and found the leader of her gang, along with a few others, standing over the bloodied corpse of the lord with the most ugly of grins on their faces.
Stunned into silence, all Aasa could do was stare in horror at the lord's lifeless face for several minutes before they were interrupted by the hurried footsteps of someone rushing down the hall. When they turned to see who it was, they were met with a deafening scream as the intruder rushed forward toward Aasa with a kitchen knife. In shock of what she had just witnessed, and fearful all the same, Aasa swung her rusty blade at her attacker in defense and felt the weapon connect. A spray of red clouded her vision before she could finally see who it was. The young lord's daughter's body crumpled to the floor, unable to speak but twitching and writhing in agony. Her mouth moved, trying to form words that wouldn't come out.
Knowing that the guards would show up any minute due to the two screams, the gang left the premises, unable to shake Aasa from her stupor as she stared at both bodies. By the time he guards did arrive, Aasa was the only one there and was taken into custody.
After the murder was investigated, it was determined that the murders couldn't have been committed by Aasa alone. She, however, wouldn't give them the names of her cohorts. In fact, she wouldn't say more than one or two words at a time. As punishment and incentive to give them the information they wanted, the guards and city watch placed Aasa in the stockades where she was publicly displayed for the entire city, including her father and brothers. Her crew never resurfaced during those days, whether out of fear of being caught, or relief that the fall had been taken, Aasa never found out.
One evening, on the eve for judgement to be passed on her life, Aasa's father came to her. He'd used his ties with the city to arrange a distraction. Believing his daughter could never commit such atrocities, he released her from the stockade and gave her a scarf that had belonged to her mother. Knowing she couldn't stay in the city, and that he'd be in big trouble if they discovered he'd released her, her father advised her to run away and not to contact him. "Just be safe, and live your life as you wish it."
Aasa did as she was told, stealing a bit of food from the market stalls under cover of night before fleeing the city. She took to the roads and covered as much ground as she could in a short amount of time. Aasa found herself on the streets far away from her hometown, scavenging in rural villages and campsites of weary travelers, until one day a caravan she'd been stalking was attacked and raided by a large bandit crew. Afraid she'd be seen and unarmed, Aasa hid until she was cornered by a few of the men who quickly pointed her out to their leader, a great strong man by the name of Khaleel Anik, along side him, a cursed boy closer to her age.
Afraid for her life, and in an impressive sleight-of-hand display, Aasa disarmed one of the men who cornered her and threatened to slice his balls off if anyone of them tried anything. After a brief silence, laughter had erupted from the group, from all but the man being threatened obviously. She amused them greatly, and impressed them with her skill, for a girl. She was accepted into their ranks, as one of the youngest members, aside from the cursed boy, with whom she constantly sparred with to develop her skills in combat, not to mention any sneak attacks to prove herself worthy in the stealth department as well.
Aasa had been with the crew ever since, even after Khaleel Anik's death at sea. Steadfastly loyal to this band of renegades and her true friends, even if some of them overestimated their importance a little.
It was then that a terrible accident happened. Aasa began noticing signs that she was in possession of the terrible Curse and quietly hid it away from her pirate crew. She hoped she could skip town when they next made port, but the daemons found her first. Her crew was slaughtered in front of her. Aasa barely managed to escape with her own life.
Unwilling to go back to the bandit life without her crew, Aasa went back into the trade business. She began hawking off some of the stolen goods her friends had been holding out on in order to remove the painful memories from her past.
